Application Note

The Bio-Rad ChemiDoc MP Imaging System captures and quantifies chemiluminescent and fluorescent signals from western blots as well as images from common nucleic-acid and protein gel stains. Its imaging capabilities include multiplex fluorescence in visible, far-red and near-infrared regions, supporting simultaneous visualization of multiple labeled targets in a single blot. Stain-Free gel and blot imaging can provide a total-protein measurement for appropriate normalization workflows. The integrated camera, onboard computer and 12-inch touchscreen work with Image Lab Touch software for image acquisition, exposure adjustment and result review. This system is useful for protein expression studies, western blot validation and comparative gel documentation. To obtain quantitative data, keep signals within detector linear range, use suitable controls and apply consistent region-of-interest and background settings. Channel overlap, saturated bands and uneven sample loading can affect interpretation. The system includes a Blot/UV/Stain-Free sample tray and Image Lab software; it is an imaging instrument, not an electrophoresis or blot-transfer apparatus.
