Neurobasal™ Medium is designed as a serum-free basal culture medium for the maintenance and maturation of prenatal and embryonic neuronal cell populations. The 500 mL liquid formulation supports neuronal experiments when combined with a suitable B-27 supplement and an appropriate glutamine source; this supplemented approach can maintain neuronal cultures without an astrocyte feeder layer. Neurobasal Medium provides a defined starting environment for neuronal-cell applications, including cultures prepared for studying neural development, neuronal function and the effects of experimental treatments. The formulation contains phenol red and is supplied as a basal medium rather than a complete medium containing every required culture supplement. Its application differs from Neurobasal-A formulations developed for certain postnatal or adult neuronal protocols. The 500 mL pack is tested for endotoxin, performance, sterility, osmolality and pH, and the liquid format avoids a separate powdered-medium reconstitution step. Store the medium at 2–8°C protected from light; the stated shelf life is 12 months from manufacture. Avoid freezing the medium because thawing can cause precipitation.
