Answer:It forms an optical interface between specimen and oil-immersion objective, reducing refraction losses and improving achievable resolution.
Answer:The refractive index is approximately 1.516 at 20 °C, designed to be close to that of optical glass.
Answer:The product is supplied in a 1 L container for laboratory microscopy use.
Sigma-Aldrich immersion oil is an optical coupling liquid for high-magnification light microscopy with a suitable oil-immersion objective. A thin film between the coverslip or specimen surface and the objective lens reduces refractive-index discontinuities, improving collection of high-angle light and supporting finer image resolution. The 1 L package is suited to microscopy laboratories conducting repeated hematology, histology, cytology or microbiology examinations. Its refractive index is approximately 1.516 at 20 °C, with a viscosity of approximately 100–120 mPa·s at 20 °C. Apply only the amount needed for the intended objective, avoid contamination of optical surfaces and clean the lens using manufacturer-approved methods after use. The oil is not a slide-mounting adhesive or stain.
