General description
These vials require a special cap with an 18 mm thread. The standard 18-400 threaded caps will not fit this vial. The part numbers for caps that are available for these vials are SU860101(with PTFE/silicone, 1.3 mm thick), SU860102 (with PTFE/butyl, 1.6 mm thick), and SU860103 (with PTFE/silicone, 1.5 mm thick). These caps are made from stainless steel and are magnetic.
Application
Headspace vial may be used for the following:
In the determination of partition coefficient of ethyl acetate in water at 0° C from independent analyses of the total amount of ethyl acetate present in the vial, by automatic equilibrium headspace gas chromatography and vapor phase calibration (VPC).
It may be used in the analysis of volatile polar residual solvents present in pharmaceutical products, during development and optimisation of headspace SPME method by GC-MS.
It may also be used in the isotopic analysis of ¹⁸O in the leaf water of C₃ and C₄ grasses, during establishing a grassland signature in veins, as it was found that grasses with different photosynthetic pathway have different interveinal differences.
It may also find application, in investigating metabolism by Pseudomonas fluorescens of volatile haloaliphatic hydrocarbons like 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,2-dichloropropane, which are some of the major contaminants of underground aquifers.

Application Note

This clear-glass headspace vial is designed for screw-top headspace sampling in gas chromatography. The vial has a 10 mL nominal volume, rounded bottom, 18 mm thread finish and outside dimensions of approximately 22.5 × 46 mm. It is supplied without a cap or septum, allowing the closure to be selected separately for the instrument and headspace method. The rounded-bottom geometry and standard headspace dimensions support automated sampling workflows where consistent vial fit is important. Each package contains 100 vials. Appropriate screw caps and septa should be selected for the sample solvent, incubation temperature, pressure conditions and autosampler configuration used in the analytical method. The 10 mL size is commonly selected when the available sample volume or required headspace ratio is smaller than for 20 mL vials. Vial fill level, incubation temperature and agitation should remain consistent across standards and samples to preserve headspace partitioning reproducibility.
