Sheep blood is a nutrient source and allows for the determination of the hemolytic properties of the isolate. The presence and pattern of hemolysis, the size of the zone of hemolysis, and colony morphology can be used to aid in the identification.Gentamicin is added to the media to inhibit the growth of many Gram-negative bacteria and staphylococci, allowing for selection of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
