The pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) are a group of pleomorphic, filterable, fastidious microorganisms which also lack a rigid cell wall. PPLO agar base was formulated to isolate and cultivate Mycoplasma species^5. Addition of yeast extract and unheated horse serum modified this formulation^6.
• Selective medium– Addition of penicillin and thallium acetate in the medium inhibit bacteria, amphotericin B inhibits yeasts and molds and methylene blue inhibits species ofMycoplasmaother thanpneumoniae.
• Ready-to-use– Convenience of prepared mediumThis medium contains beef extract infusion and peptone which supply nutrients that are necessary for growth of mycoplasmas. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium. Yeast extract enhances the growth by providing B-complex. Normal horse serum provides a protein source.
