Method: Colorimetric, with test strips, 0.1 - 0.3 - 0.6 - 1 - 2 - 3 g/L (NO₂⁻), MQuant®

The test can be used for measuring the nitrit concentration of boiler water and cooling water. On the MQuant® Nitrite test strips, nitrite ions react with an aromatic amine to form an orange-red azo dye. The nitrite concentration is measured semi-quantitatively by visual comparison of the reaction zone of the test strip with the fields of a color scale. The test strips are perfect for pre-testing a sample in an economic and quick way to estimate the nitrite concentration and a possible dilution factor prior to using a quantitative method such as a Reflectoquant® or Spectroquant® Nitrite test.

Application Note

Merck MQuant Nitrite Test Strips enable rapid semi-quantitative measurement of nitrite in high-concentration aqueous samples such as boiler water and cooling-water systems. The colorimetric reaction follows Griess chemistry: nitrite reacts with an aromatic amine to produce an orange-red azo dye in the reaction zone. Compare the developed strip color with the supplied scale to estimate nitrite concentrations at 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 2 or 3 g/L expressed as NO₂⁻. Each package is intended for 100 tests and can also be used with the MQuant StripScan app where supported. Collect a representative sample, follow the specified immersion and reaction times, and perform the color comparison under consistent lighting. Highly colored or chemically interfering samples may require dilution or verification using a quantitative laboratory method. Store the test strips at 2–8°C and keep the container protected from moisture and contamination.
