General descriptionSodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an amphipathic detergent commonly used for denaturing proteins. SDS has a long-chain aliphatic group, with negatively charged sulfate groups that coat the surface of proteins, causing them to lose their quaternary structure.
ApplicationAnionic detergent
Sodium dodecyl sulfate has been used:
- in chromatin immunoprecipitation
- in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)
- as a component of radioimmunoprecipitation assay buffer for immunoblotting
Analysis NoteTested for use in denatured polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
