Waters ACQUITY UPLC CSH130 C18 1.7 µm particles contain a low and carefully-defined concentration of positive charges that yield comparatively excellent peak shape for peptides using either FA- or TFA-containing mobile phases. The fact that the performance of a CSH130 C18 column exhibits little dependence on strong ion pairing agents makes it ideal for LC or LC-MS applications. The VanGuard pre-column connects directly to the inlet of an eXtended Performance column which minimizes extra columns volumes and reduces leaking by eliminating additional connections.

Application Note

The Waters ACQUITY UPLC Peptide CSH C18 VanGuard pre-column protects a compatible analytical peptide column by intercepting particulates and strongly retained sample impurities before they reach the main separation bed. Each pre-column uses 1.7 µm charged-surface hybrid C18 particles with 130 Å pores in a short 2.1 × 5 mm format, and three pre-columns are supplied per pack. The CSH bonded phase matches the selectivity family of ACQUITY UPLC Peptide CSH C18 analytical columns designed for peptides in the approximate 1–15 kDa range. A direct-connect VanGuard design minimizes additional fluid connections and extra-column volume when installed on a compatible analytical-column inlet. Inspect the pre-column and mating fitting for cleanliness and correct seating before pressure is applied. Monitor backpressure and peptide peak shape during routine analysis; a blocked or exhausted guard should be replaced without assuming the analytical column itself is damaged. The pre-column is not a stand-alone replacement for the 150 mm analytical column.
