Waters SunFire C18 VanGuard cartridges provide a short, replaceable guard bed ahead of a matching reversed-phase analytical column. Each 3.9 × 5 mm cartridge contains endcapped C18 silica particles with a 5 µm particle size and 100 Å pores. The intended application is protection of 4.6 mm internal-diameter SunFire C18 analytical columns packed with 5 µm sorbent. Guard cartridges intercept contamination that would otherwise accumulate near the analytical column inlet, making routine replacement less disruptive than replacing the complete analytical column. The silica C18 phase is specified for mobile phases from pH 2 to 8; the guard's maximum pressure rating is 18,000 psi (1,240 bar), but the complete HPLC configuration may have a lower operating limit. Use the appropriate VanGuard cartridge holder and verify inlet connection compatibility. If backpressure or peak shape deteriorates, troubleshoot the guard and sample preparation before concluding that the analytical column has failed.
